Khon Kaen Smart City

Here at Khon Kaen Times we’re all about promoting Khon Kaen and we’re in good company.

Of the provinces that are part of the government’s “smart city plans”, Khon Kaen appears to have made the greatest progress.

This is largely down to a group of Khon Kaen citizens taking the initiative themselves. The band of entrepreneurs from 20 Khon Kaen-based companies and leading organisations include the owners of property development projects, car dealerships and hotels, university lecturers, former local politicians and factory managers.

The group from Khon Kaen’s strong private sector are notably led by third-generation Chinese entrepreneurs aged 40-50, who have been friends since childhood.

The project includes a 23km Light Rail North- South Line for greater links with initial investment coming very much from the private sector.

The Khon Kaen development plan is aiming to double its per capita income to US 2,000-5,000 (398,291-497,943 baht) per head per year over the next 12 years up from $6,000 per head per year in 2016.

Another reason the development is ‘Smart’ is that care is being taken to make sure growth is sustainable and eco-friendly – Khon Kaen Municipality mayor Theerasak Theekhayuphan said recently Khon Kaen has plans to construct a waste disposal plant that converts waste into electricity.

Khon Kaen province has a population of 1.8 Million with significant Human capital and the largest and most accredited university in the region.
